Travertine derives it's name from the town of Tivoli, Italy, known as Tibur in Roman times. The ancient name
for stone was lapis tiburtinus, meaning stone of Tibur. Tiburtinus slowly evolved into Travertine. Italy
is famous for it's travertine, the Colosseum in Rome is one of the many monuments & buildings made of it.
At Stone Source, we carry the original Alabastrino Travertine
from Tivoli, as well as a wide variety of travertines from both Turkey and Mexico.
Travertine has natural pores and cavities which create an open and pitted texture and give the stone an aged
and weathered look. Travertine also may be filled and polished to a smooth, shinier finish. The colors of travertine
vary from shades of gray and white, gold and red, to cream and brown. At Stone Source, we have full lines of
products in our vast array of travertines: field tiles, accent tiles, mosaics,
medallions, countertops and even
sinks! We also import a collection of etched travertine accents and medallions, with
custom designs and colors hand-etched into the stone.
